I am proud to say that since 13th April 2010 Parker Sedgemore Opticians has a Corporate membership to the International Institute of Colorimetry. Nina Parker- Sedgemore and Mr Noon have Fellowships to the International Institute of Colorimetry.
At Parker Sedegmore Opticians in Bristol and Bath, we understand the difficulty children and adults have with reading text when they have any form of visual stress (hyper excitability of the neurons in the visual cortex). Any one who thinks they might have even the slightest amount of visual stress, even just under achieving in the class room an Extended Eye Examination and Colorimetry would be very much recommended. The Extended Eye Examination would be with Mr C Noon our Optometrist who has extra qualifications specifically for the prescribing Colorimetry Tints. Nina Parker-Sedgemore has the same qualifaction for performing the Colorimetry Exams, but with the Ophthalmic Dispensing and Contact Lenses, does not perform the initial Extended Eye Examination, but can dispense Colorimetry Spectacles and prescribe Colorimetry Contact Lenses.
Visual stress can also be associated with Dyslexia
Visual Stress: Is a condition contributing to reading difficulties, this is totally seperate from needing prescription spectacles to read, but the intuitive colorimetry tints offer the easiest solution. Visual Stress causes eye strain and headaches when reading. It can be responsible for light sensitivity, appearance of patterns in the text (Myersand glare effect. The hypothesis is that the stress is due to a hyper excitability of the neurons in the visual cortex, an area of the brain at the back of the head, which fire inappropriately. In other words these cells kind of work a bit too fast which causes the disturbances in the text. Visual stress can be due to a number of conditions including Dyslexia, but is not the same.
What are the symptoms of Visual Stress?
-
glare
-
headaches when reading
-
movement/blurring of print
-
eye ache
- rapid tiring
-
letters changing shape or size
What are the signs of Visual Stress?
-
rubbing eyes
-
increased blink rate
-
poor concentration
-
using finger as marker
-
low self esteem
As people get older and text is not such a meaningless group of words, Visual Stress can be less pronounced, but still there. In a lot of cases the syndrome goes undiagnosed and untreated until adult life.
At Parker Sedgemore Opticians we offer the Intuative Colorimetry Examination across Bristol and in our Bath practices.
The tint is selected rapidly and efficiently in an examination lasting about 20-30 minutes carried out by a specialised practitioner. the optimal colour which will benefit each individual can change over time, especially with children. It is therefore very important that the patient visits the specialised Optometrist regularly for re-evaluations.
The instrument was developed by Professor Arnold Wilkins, it is fully supported by research studies and controlled trials.
It is used by an Optician to logically explore colours to find the optimal Precision Tint for the relief of Visual Stress.
The instrument changes the colour, while the eyes are colour adapted. A final colour which is extremely precise to each individuals needs, will be determined. The colour will be different for each person and the precision coming from a choice of over 100,000 colour combinations now available. Different light settings will also affect the efficiency of the chosen colour, this can be adapted to ensure optimal colour is used in different situations.
The chosen hue, saturation and brightness of colour is usually made up in to spectacles but can also be made in to a soft contact lens.
